Excluding a short stint of founding Frozenana: “An Apeeling Treat”, a mobile concession stand which sells chocolate-covered frozen bananas, Jonah Cohen’s primary obsession has been music. Picking up the guitar at a young age, Jonah quickly began delving into the subtler aspects of jazz theory. He is, first and foremost, a dazzling lead guitarist. Soon thereafter, however, a romance inspired him to write his first song, and the rest is history.
This past May, Cohen, an upstate New York native, graduated from Brown University with a degree in Visual Arts, a passion for painting, and a completed course load in the pre-medical sciences. At Brown, Jonah began playing shows, traveling to different colleges on the weekends. “I started to realize that getting out of the confines of my room and sharing my experiences with others night after night was where I wanted to be.” Bright, irreverent, and imaginative, Cohen is truly the consummate performer: blending narratives, anecdotes, and beautiful melodies – intimately connecting with listeners and live audiences.
Cohen’s stunning new album, Flashback, introduces fans to his Technicolor landscape of sophisticated lyrical and melodic musings on the past, the present, and the hope of new beginnings. Flashback was born during the summer of 2003, but finished in 2004, as Jonah’s last year of college awaited. He completed the 12-song collection in his new hometown of Boston, MA, mixing Flashback at the prestigious Q Division Studios (James Taylor, Guster, Howie Day). Flashback’s precocious insights belie Jonah’s 22 years. His mature sensitivity captures the light and profound alike, as he explores love and loss with soulful honesty, wit, and compassion.
Flashback is an emotionally intense chronicle of Cohen’s recent past. “I’d like to think that this album offers optimism even in the midst of some pretty trying experiences,” he explains. With this new release, Jonah comes into his own as an artist with a compilation of songs that is diverse in flavor and musically cosmopolitan. “It was really important to me to create an album where every song would shine with its own character.” Flashback does not disappoint. “It has been a long time coming: it’s hard to convey the excitement I feel about the advent of this record,” Jonah says of the largely self-produced album. “So much of myself has gone into it and I don’t know when I will do something like this again. I can’t wait to share it.”
